In the early records, the family name is sometimes spelled Rue, Rowe, Row, and later as Rew. John Rue was one of the original settlers of Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut. John married first, in 1685 at Farmington, Connecticut, HANNAH NORTON, widow of Samuel North. In 1686 he received a land grant at Farmington. The Connecticut probate court record for September 6, 1694 reads in part:
"Whereas, there was a complaint made by John Norton sen. & John Norton Jr. that the Children of Samuel North had not received of John Rue their portions distributed or allotted to them out of their father North's Estate, & sewed sayd Rue for security of what was still to be payd of the sayd Children's portions, This Court doe order the sayd John Rue to pay the remaynder of Tho. North's portion forthwith unto the sayd Thomas North besides what he is to receive in Land, & to give John Norton sen. sufficient security for the portion that is alloted to Hannah North by the Court, as sayd John Norton Jun. is guardian unto the sayd Hannah North. All which being don, to be finall acquttance of the sayd John Rue respecting Samuel North's Children their Estates or portions." [Vol. V, page 73]He moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1707. He married second, January 27, 1707/8, MARY HILLS, daughter of John and Hepzibah Hills. He married third, January 22, 1718/19, MARGARET SEYMOUR, widow of Timothy Root (1661-1713), born January 17, 1674, daughter of John and Mary (Watson) Seymour.
John died in 1717 at Hartford, Connecticut. The inventory of his estate, on file at Hartford, was taken September 26, 1717 by Thomas Ensin and Jonathan Easton. It was valued at 22-02-07 and included several broadcloth coats, two wigs, furniture, cooking utensils, a Bible, and several divinity books. Letters of administration were granted by the court to John and Hezekiah Rue, sons of the deceased on October 1, 1717. The account of their administration was accepted by the court on September 2, 1718.The Farmington, Connecticut probate court record for November 4, 1718 reads in part:
"John Rew of Farmington, in right of his wife Margaret Rew, alias Root, Adms., exhibits now an account of Adms. Order to dist. the estate:L s d
To Margaret Rew, alias Root, 22-04-05
To Jonathan Root, 23-14-05
