2. William Campbell [scrapbook] (Whitaker ) was born in 1762 in Virginia. He died in 1817 in Virginia.
WILLIAM CAMPBELL was born in 1762, probably in King and Queen County, Virginia. He married Nancy Frances Woolfolk, also called Ann, daughter of Robert Woolfolk, Jr., and Ann (George) Woolfolk, and was said to have "moved to Illinois."
This William Campbell, or perhaps his uncle, contributed brandy and beef to the commissary supplies for the use of the Army in King and Queen County, Virginia, during the Revolution as shown by several surviving receipts signed by Captain Robert Hill.
In the June 1, 1782 Valuations of Land by Commissioners Peter Dudley and William Courtney, William Campbell is listed twice:
910 acres of land, a3/6
160.16.0, 0.17.9, and
238 acres of land, a1/6, 17.17.0, 0.3.6 3/4.
William and Ann Campbell moved to King William County, Virginia, before 1800.
He purchased a tract of 171 acres from Capt. Thomas Nelson near Mangohick
Church. On June 11, 1801, they sold this land to John Anderson for L307. On
August 19, 1802, William and Ann Campbell sold 15 acres of the land upon which
they resided to James Terry for L27.
Sometime later, William Campbell purchased a tract of 468 acres which had been
a part of the Taliaferro plantation, called "Fork Bridge." The land
that William Campbell bought joined the land of Mrs. Elizabeth (Pollard)
Taliaferro and the new Campbell home was called "Claybank." Claybank
Plantation was located south of Campbells Fork.
William Campbell died in 1817, and Claybank Plantation passed to his son Achilles.
About 1950, Claybank was purchased by the Chesapeake Corporation of Virginia. The corporation set fire to the house in 1967 or later when the timber was harvested for pulp in the paper mill at West Point. The property was later leased by a hunting club. The club knocked down the two standing chimneys and used the bricks as fill for a road base.
William married Nancy Frances Woolfolk daughter of Robert Woolfolk Jr. and Ann George about 1795. Nancy was born in 1765 in Virginia. She died after 1817. Nancy is a diminutive form of Ann (or vice versa), and Nancy had a brother named Achillis.
