1. Whitaker Campbell [scrapbook] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 was born in 1727. He died in 1814 in Bruington, King and Queen, Virginia. He was buried in 1814 in Bruington - Campbell's Hill, King and Queen, Virginia.
This branch of the Campbell family is said to be descended from the Argyll Clan of Scotland. Whitaker Campbell is believed to have been a brother of William Campbell (1730-1805). They lived south of Bruington village in King and Queen County, Virginia.
Whitaker Campbell may have grown up in a house that once stood on a rise still called Campbell's Hill southeast of Bruington village. He had large land holdings in the neighborhood. He is thought to have built the older part of a house called "Brewngton" located about a third of a mile south of Bruington village on the east side of what is now State Highway 14.
The original house was approximately 18x20 feet and may have had a basement and two upper floors. A narrow enclosed stairway on the south end connected the three floors. There were tall chimneys at both ends. A shed room was attached beyond the north end chimney. Sometime in the mid 1800's the original house was almost doubled in size by an addition on the south end.
The house was bought by Mr. John A. Fleet in 1905 who lived there until his death, after which it was bought from his estate by Philip S. Greenwood in 1912. Robert Minter Griggs acquired it in 1919, and the house subsequently passed to his daughter. She married John H. Ball, and they were living there in 1972. Their son, Edwin Gary Ball, and his family occupied the house after 1994.
Whitaker Campbell married first, in 1760, JANE HILL, daughter of Thomas Hill of King William County, Virginia. They had eight children. Jane Hill Campbell died in 1796.
Whit Campbell, Robert Hill, Thomas Hill, and Henry Brown were witnesses to the deed made January 6, 1775 for the sale of 30 acres from Churchill Anderson to Joseph Semple in King and Queen County, Virginia.
Whitaker Campbell was a soldier in the Revolution and served as a Captain of the infantry in the Virginia State Militia. He contributed to the recruiting effort as shown in a surviving Treasury Receipt Cash Book for 1777-1778 for King and Queen County.
Whitaker Campbell also contributed rye and beef to the commissary supplies for the use of the Army during the Revolution as shown by receipts signed by Captain Robert Hill.
Whitaker Campbell is listed in the valuations of land returned June 1, 1782 by commissioners Peter Dudley and William Courtney as owning 398 acres of land, a3/9, 74.12.6, 0.14.11.
"Whit Campbell" was one of 86 King and Queen County residents who signed a petition addressed to the "Speaker & Gent'm of the House of Delegates of King & Queen," dated November 5, 1783, complaining about a law requiring all taxes to be paid in gold or silver coin.
Whitaker Campbell married second, in 1786, MARTHA DESHAZO, daughter of Peter Deshazo. They had four children.
In the Alterations of Land in 1786, "Whitacar Campbell" is listed as having sold 80 acres to Thomas Cleveley.
In the 1787 "Tax List A" for King and Queen County, Virginia, "Whitacre Campbell" is listed as living with one white male between the age of 16 and 21, five blacks above age 16, ten blacks under age 16, seven horses, and fifteen cattle.
In 1812-13, he "was a helpless rheumatic, in a rolling chair, age 85, and living on the Campbell home in King and Queen, Virginia." Whitaker Campbell died in 1814, age 87. He is buried in a sunken grave on the old Campbell estate near Woodstock, Virginia. Martha Deshazo Campbell is buried in Bruington Church.
